Leviticus 5:14-6:7 Jesus, our guilt offering, Offer the guilt offering

  5:14-19,
14The LORD said to Moses:  15"When a person commits a violation and sins unintentionally in regard to any of the LORD's holy things, he is to bring to the LORD as a penalty a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel. It is a guilt offering. 16He must make restitution for what he has failed to do in regard to the holy things, add a fifth of the value to that and give it all to the priest, who will make atonement for him with the ram as a guilt offering, and he will be forgiven. 17"If a person sins and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD's commands, even though he does not know it, he is guilty and will be held responsible. 18He is to bring to the priest as a guilt offering a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for him for the wrong he has committed unintentionally, and he will be forgiven. 19It is a guilt offering; he has been guilty of wrongdoing against the LORD."

  6:1-7,
1The LORD said to Moses: 2"If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the LORD by deceiving his neighbor about something entrusted to him or left in his care or stolen, or if he cheats him, 3or if he finds lost property and lies about it, or if he swears falsely, or if he commits any such sin that people may do -- 4when he thus sins and becomes guilty, he must return what he has stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to him, or the lost property he found, 5or whatever it was he swore falsely about. He must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day he presents his guilt offering. 6And as a penalty he must bring to the priest, that is, to the LORD, his guilt offering, a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. 7In this way the priest will make atonement for him before the LORD, and he will be forgiven for any of these things he did that made him guilty."

We change when we meet Jesus. In Luke chapter 19, Zacchaeus who met Jesus was the rich man and chief tax collector of Jericho, he was transformed into a new person. He confessed to Jesus he will pay back four times what he has been deceived. This is about guilt offering.

1. What is a guilt offering? (Asham).

Guilt offering is a sacrifice made by adding a fifth of the damage done to God and neighbors. Isaiah 53:10, Jesus is a guilt offering who died for our guilts. We are grateful to the Lord who has been forgave us.

2. Do I also have to offer a guilt offering? (5:15, 6: 2,3)
  1) Sin against the holy things of God. example: to give the tithes to God  less with miscounting the amount; or to misrepresent the priest sacrifice of the fellowship offering; 2) to deceive the things his neighbor about something entrusted to him, 3) to steal something of neighbor, 4) to extort neighbor's property, 5) to find lost property and to lie about it, and 6) To damage neighbor's property and speaking falsely about it.

3. Why is guilt offering offered? (5:16, 27:27, 31) Psalm 19:12,

6:2, 'unfaithful to the LORD', Be faithful to the Lord. This was to prevent the same sins being repeated out of carelessness(6:2-7). We can see that this was God's thoughtful consideration by demanding for such strict compensation in order to prevent the same sins from repeating. By paying 1/5 more, the number of recidivism decreases due to economic disadvantage.
Jewish repent thoroughly. They must go with two witnesses and be forgiven. If the victim is dead, go to the grave and ask for forgiveness in front of the 10 witnesses. So they were forgiven and practice holiness.
The movie, <Milyang> Young widow Shin Ae experienced the impact of being murdered of her only son, her hope, meaning of life. She overcame her shock through her faith and went to the enemy who killed her son and forgave him. But the enemy saids that he was already forgiven by God. This makes her more desperate. 'Why did God forgive him before I forgive the enemy, the murderer?' This film points out that repentance must solve not only the relationship with God but also with people.
Matthew 5:23,24 And first go and be reconciled to your brother, then come and offer your gifts

4. What is the spirit of guilt offering? (Num. 5:6, 1 John 1:9)
  * Holy Communion in the jail.

The frail man should be sanctified again, come to God, pay one fifth more, and confess to his victim. Compensation is a form of sanctification through action. Let us all follow Jesus, a guilt offering, to make a right relationship with God and neighbors, and live and share with souls who are suffering.
