Psalm 102:1-16 — Days of Suffering: Seek the Face of the Lord

1-16,
1. A prayer of an afflicted person who has grown weak and pours out a lament before the Lord. Hear my prayer, Lord; let my cry for help come to you. 2.Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly. 3.For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers. 4.My heart is blighted and withered like grass; I forget to eat my food. 5.In my distress I groan aloud and am reduced to skin and bones. 6.I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.
7.I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof. 8.All day long my enemies taunt me; those who rail against me use my name as a curse. 9.For I eat ashes as my food and mingle my drink with tears 10.because of your great wrath, for you have taken me up and thrown me aside. 11.My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass. 12.But you, Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations. 13.You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come. 14.For her stones are dear to your servants; her very dust moves them to pity. 15.The nations will fear the name of the Lord, all the kings of the earth will revere your glory. 16.For the Lord will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory.

1. On Days of Suffering, Cry Out with Tears (1-10):
Life inevitably brings encounters with suffering, both great and small. The psalmist describes how his life is vanishing like smoke, and his bones are scorched black like charcoal (3). He faces immense hardship, eating ashes as his food and drinking his own tears as his beverage (9). Just as Job—after losing all his vast livestock, all ten of his children, and even his own health—"sat in the ashes," the ashes left behind after a fire speak to the deep suffering and sorrow of human life. Yet, the psalmist honestly pours out his deep anguish to God. He cries out with tears—much like Hannah, who, amidst the immense suffering of her life, wept bitterly and prayed. God does not listen to prayers that are contrived or artificial; rather, He hears these sincere prayers born of tears. Let us all, therefore, not hide our pain, but come before God with our tears.

2. Embrace the Community's Pain and Pray (13-16, 21)
The psalmist feels a profound sense of isolation, like a solitary bird. He confesses, "I am like an owl of the wilderness, like a little owl of the waste places. I lie awake, and am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop" (6-7). He describes himself as a desolate, isolated being—abandoned "like an owl of the wilderness, like a little owl of the waste places." He portrays himself as a solitary figure, completely alone and cut off from others—"like a lonely sparrow on the housetop." Gazing upon the ruined Temple and the fallen City of Zion, he is immersed in deep loneliness and sorrow. People have mocked him, and his very name has become a byword for a curse. Yet, he does not pray solely for himself; he embraces the pain of his community and prays for the restoration of the fallen Zion. Moving beyond personal suffering, we advance toward intercessory prayer for the restoration of the community. We sing of how the Lord has built up Zion and appeared in glory. We confess that we delight in the very stones of Zion and that even her dust is worthy of grace. The collapse of Zion—that is, Jerusalem—was a consequence of sin. The psalmist regards the community's sin as his own; he mourns deeply and prays as if drinking water mingled with tears (v. 9). May we, too, become believers who intercede on behalf of our church, our families, and our neighbors.

3. In Days of Suffering, Seek the Lord’s Face with Hope in the Covenant (vv.2,12–13,16,21)
In his time of suffering, the psalmist prays that the Lord would not hide His face from him (v. 2). A time of suffering is not a time to distance ourselves from God, but rather a time to seek the Lord’s face with even greater earnestness. Looking to God through the lens of His covenant, he pleads to be granted a vision of the Lord’s face. Ultimately, he experiences the presence of God. In verse 12, he encounters the Eternal Lord. He places a higher value on experiencing God’s presence than on finding a solution to his suffering. At His appointed time, God will restore Zion and bestow His grace upon her. Drawing upon Num. 6:25–26, let us pray that the Lord would make His face shine upon us and lift up His countenance toward us. Let us focus on God rather than on our problems, and let us seek His grace today.
In verse 13, “You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come.” May we all seek the Lord’s face and experience the grace of our Lord.

♪ In these dark days lift up your eyes ♪
1. In these dark days lift up your eyes to Jesus,
lift your eyes He's still upon the throne,
And come what may, He never will forsake you
For He is God to Him all things are known.
2. When you are weak and your heart is weak
Look to the Lord of Power.
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
I will always keep you strong.
(Chorus) Lift up your eyes He still is there,
Be not dismayed He knows your weight of care,
In these dark days lift up your eyes to Jesus
And trust in Him He will your burden bear.

Application: Apply these to my life today.
Questions:
1) Am I praying honestly to God amidst my suffering, or am I hiding it?
2) Is my prayer focused on problem-solving, or on God's presence?
3) Am I interceding for the pain and struggles of my community (church, family, neighbors)?
4) When I feel loneliness and isolation, where do I turn?

Prayer:
O God of Love, we praise You—the Lord who calls to us even amidst our days of suffering. At times, we have lived our lives hiding our tears and pretending to be strong. Yet, in this very moment, we lay down our weaknesses before You. Lord, hear our cry. Do not turn away from our tearful prayers. Grant us a heart that embraces our community, transcending our own pain, and bestow upon us the faith to intercede. Above all, may our lives be dedicated not merely to solving problems, but to seeking Your face. In days of suffering, may we all hold fast to You and rise again within the power of Your presence. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
