Psalm 14:1-7 In the world that says there is no God

We learn a valuable lesson from the Book of Psalms today.

1. Is there no God? (1-4)

There are people that say, “there is no God.” Psalm 14:1 says that the fool says that in his heart.
1 Samuel 25 shows the story of a fool, a wicked man Nabal. He is rich, but cruel and evil. He did not acknowledge David who was chosen by God to be the next king. He said in his heart that there is no God. He did not show kindness and love to his neighbors and hurled insults at David’s men. The fool is wicked and corrupt and does not do good because he does not believe that God is watching his vile deeds. Do we live differently from the way the fool lives? We confess that we believe in God but do we seek God only on Sundays during worship service? How do we live during the week for 6 days? Do we rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances? This is God’s Will for our lives in Jesus Christ. But this is not easy. In order to fulfill this, we must pray continually. Through prayer, we will be aware of God’s presence and live as His children, rejoicing and giving thanks in everything. When we recognize God’s presence in our lives, we understand that the eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. I pray that we will not live as foolish but as wise.

2. God is present in the company of the righteous (5-6).
The righteous seeks God and they do good. They call on God and the LORD is their refuge. Verse 6 says the LORD is the poor’s refuge. God answers and responds when they lament.

3. God gives salvation (7).

David ends his prayer with song of salvation. Salvation only comes from the LORD. David believed that salvation would come out of Zion, Jerusalem, which represented God’s presence. Acts 4:12 says, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” God is present in His people, in the company of the righteous. Our sins are forgiven through the blood Jesus shed on the cross. He sets us free from sin and death and gives us salvation. David was confident in God’s redemptive plan and rejoiced that the LORD restores His people.

We start in the world filled with evil where the wicked rules. David prays that they will turn away from foolishness. We must pray for them like David did. Pray for those that say, “there is no God.” When they repent and return to God, we will rejoice and be glad like Jacob and Israel rejoice. Although atheism may be prevalent, let us continue to live in God’s presence, share Jesus in this world and look forward to His return. Amen.
