Jn. 11:17-37 Resurrection, Jesus of Life, Sermon Summary

17-37,
17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18 Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,
19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.  20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
21 "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."
23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24 Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."
25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
27 "Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world." 28 And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. "The Teacher is here," she said, "and is asking for you."
29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. 32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 "Where have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied.
35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, "See how he loved him!"
37 But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"

Live with a secret of 3 days

Four days after Lazarus's death, Jesus arrived at the house. Lazarus’ sister Martha regrets that if the Lord had been here, her brother would not have died. She relies on 'if'.

Verses 25 and 26, the Lord asks Martha and us today. "I am the resurrection and the life, and those who believe in me will live and live, and those who believe in me will not die forever, and do you believe this?" Jesus asks, "do you believe in the living Word?"

Verse 27, Martha's confession, "Lord, I believe," Jesus shows that He is the  resurrection and the life, that raises the life of the dead. It is four days of dying and buried, and it revives the rotten smelly Lazarus. "Lazarus, Come out!" Then came Lazarus. Jesus is the resurrection and the life of the dead.

There is hoover dam in Nevada. Hoover Dam started in 1931 during the U.S. economic downturn and was completed in 1936. A few years ago, a nearby bypass was completed in eight years, significantly reducing the time from Las Vegas to Phoenix. In front of this dam is a large bulletin board with the names of many people. It's a dam built in the desert, and there are many victims. These victims are on the bulletin board. But at the end of the bulletin board is an impressive phrase.  "Why did they die? It was to have a river of bottled water flowing back into this desert, and that this barren land would bloom again like a rose."
Jesus died and risen again for our sins. If you put a sign on the scene of the resurrection, you can use it like this. "Here the Lord Jesus, whom I love, was resurrected three days after he died and was buried. The reason for this is to make my life like a desert, with a river of bottled water flowing again, and my dry and desolate life blooming like a rose."
Don't we live like Martha today? Do you believe that the Lord of the resurrection and the life are working in reality? Don't rely on 'if', let's believe in the word of life, Jesus.
Jesus is who make our life live like the dead. It is the resurrection that brings us to life again. Let's live with this Jesus through His power. Amen.
