Eze.48:1-14: Know the Division and Holiness

Eze.48, the final chapter of the Book of Ezekiel, is a vision of the distribution of the new land. It deals with the portions of the seven northern tribes and the priests. This depicts the restoration of Israel, the restoration of a perfect relationship with God, and the consummation of God's kingdom.

1. Division of the Land of the Seven Northern Tribes(1-7)

Starting from the northern border, the land is distributed in order to the tribes of Dan, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, Reuben, and Judah. Each tribe receives an equal section from east to west. Of these, the tribe of Judah, the political center of Israel, occupies the location closest to the sanctuary.

2. Central Sanctuary: The Share of the Priests and Levites(8-14)

The holy area(sanctuary) is allocated in the central and most important location, directly beneath the seven tribes' portions. The portion of the priests (the descendants of Zadok) is designated first and most sacred (9-12). This land includes the sanctuary and is called the most holy place.
Highlight: Because the priests were called to serve God, their portion was especially holy and set apart. The portion of the Levites, who would serve in the sanctuary, was assigned immediately next to the priests' quarters(13-14). This land cannot be sold, exchanged, or transferred. It symbolizes the eternal separation given to God. Believers must prioritize justice and holiness (see Mt.6:33, But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.).

The restored community has two core values:
1. Fair and Orderly Division(God's Justice)

The equal division of land to each tribe signifies God's impartial justice(1-7). Spiritual restoration goes hand in hand with social justice. Appliedly, God is the one who divides the spheres of our lives(time, talents, resources) equally and fairly. Rather than coveting someone else's portion or claiming unfairness, we should gratefully accept the portion God has given us. Lesson: God has equal concern and love for each person. This is confirmed by the fact that God did not ignore even the smallest and most unfaithful tribes, granting each a beautiful inheritance (Rom.10:12, For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him).

2. Prioritizing Holiness(God's Presence)

The priests' and Levites' portions were placed at the very center of the new land, in the most sacred places, making it clear that a relationship with God and worship are the community's top priorities(8-14). Applying this, where are the most sacred and important areas of our lives (worship, prayer, meditation on the Word) located? Just as the priests' portion was a "most holy place" that could not be sold, there must be areas in our lives that are set apart to God and cannot be compromised. Lesson: God gives each person a unique role and mission. Looking at the inheritances distributed to the twelve tribes of Israel, some tribes had to focus on national defense against foreign enemies, while others, connected to God's temple, required greater attention to piety and holiness. Therefore, each tribe and each people were to give glory to God by doing their best in the position they were given (2Cor.7:2, Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one).

These are the questions:
1. Questions about the distributed portion(1-7):
Just as all tribes received an equal share, do you accept the gifts, time, and finances God has given you with gratitude rather than complaint? How are you managing the "land" (possession) given to you according to God's will?

2. Questions about the placement of holiness(8-14):
Just as the "most holy area" was placed at the center of the community, does your relationship with God (worship, meditation) occupy the most central and non-negotiable position in your day and week? What areas of your time, finances, and relationships should you rededicate to God as "unsellable holy areas"?

3. Questions about the holiness of the office(11):
The priests (descendants of Zadok) were given special holiness as those who had not sinned. When you perform your duties in church or at home, are you doing your best and setting yourself apart with the awareness of "holy service"?

Conclusion&Application:
This chapter offers hope for the future when God's kingdom will be fully realized—that is, the hope that Jesus will return and complete it. Jesus' return is the day when God's kingdom will be complete, a day when all suffering and pain will disappear and eternal peace will prevail. Question: How do I hold this hope for Jesus' return? As I await the day when Jesus returns and completes God's kingdom, am I practicing the values of God's kingdom in my life today? With this hope in mind, decide how you will live today.
Through Jesus Christ, we have already become members of God's kingdom, and through Him, we experience and live that kingdom. We must live a life that participates in the expansion of God's kingdom and enjoy peace and hope in God's presence. As we meditate on these words, let us reflect on how the kingdom of God is being realized concretely in our lives through Jesus. Let us pray that we may serve God as workers of that kingdom and live with hope. Amen.

Only when we all live God-centered lives can we experience true peace and prosperity. This truth is confirmed by the fact that God placed His temple at the heart of Israel. Knowing that a self-centered life truly separate from God results only in emptiness and despair(Lk.15:11-16, 11.Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. 12.The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them. 13."Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14.After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15.So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16.He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.), let us become builders of God's kingdom who enjoy true peace and rest in the Lord. Amen.
