Ex.19:1-6, Hold Fast to the Words of the Covenant
1-6, 1. On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt—on that very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai. 2. After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. 3. Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4. 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. 6. You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites."

<Sermon>
After saving Israel from Egypt through the blood of the Passover lamb, God miraculously led them across the Red Sea. He subsequently trained them in the wilderness to become His people. He then summoned them to Mount Sinai to establish a covenant and appoint them as His people and His servants. Let us consider four key points from this passage.

1. A life within the covenant is transformed by the Word(v.3).
Salvation is not the end; it is the beginning of a covenantal life transformed by the Word. God calls us to His Word, enabling us to learn His will and live in obedience to it day by day. Verse 5 states, "If you obey me fully and keep my covenant..." This refers to the words of the covenant: "I am one of God's people, and God is my God." Therefore, we must listen attentively to His Word, learn it well, and follow it—for we are God's people. Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Romans 12:1-2, “1. I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

2. God trains His young on eagle’s wings(v.4).
Just as an eagle trains its young using its wings, God refines and matures our faith through times in the wilderness. Hardships and suffering are also part of a training process through which God, in His love, molds us into more complete beings. Verse 4 says, "You have seen how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself." This is a truly beautiful expression. Because the eagle loves its young so deeply, it does not raise them in mere comfort. When the time is right, it shakes the nest. It drops its young from high cliffs, teaching them to flap their wings. If they fall, it catches them and lifts them back up on its wings, then makes them fly again. Why does it do this? It is not to raise them as common sparrows, but as kings of the sky. God’s love is the same. When difficulties arise, we often think God has abandoned us. Yet God says, "I carried you and brought you this far." The wilderness is not a punishment, but a time of training. Illness, financial hardship, tears within the family, and seasons of waiting—all of these can be part of the process by which God matures our faith.

3. Those who hold fast to the words of the covenant are God’s precious(special) possession(treasure)(5).
God claims those who cling to the covenant’s words as His own treasured possession. Those who make the Word the standard for their lives and obey it live unshakably, grounded in God’s promises rather than worldly values. Psalm 1:1–3: “1. Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2. but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” I bless you to live by holding fast to the Word, experiencing daily transformation, and living as God’s special treasure.

4. God calls us to be a kingdom of priests&a holy nation(6).
Furthermore, by calling us to be a kingdom of priests&a holy nation, God has entrusted us with the mission of proclaiming His love&the Gospel within our families, churches, workplaces,&the world. Therefore, believers must firmly hold fast to God’s covenant words&obey them in any circumstance, thereby enjoying God’s promises&living a life that reveals His glory to the world.

Application&Resolution: 1) Let us not merely dwell on the thrill of salvation but be transformed daily by the Word. 2) Let us accept times in the wilderness as God’s training for faith. 3) Let us live as a covenant people who make the Word the standard for life and obey it. 4) Let us fulfill the mission of a kingdom of priests and a holy nation within our families, churches, and the world. "I will live by firmly holding fast to God’s covenant words and obeying them in any situation."

Prayer/Loving God,Father, we thank You for saving us and calling us to be Your covenant people. Help us to embrace every moment in the wilderness as training for our faith,& to live lives of obedience, holding fast to Your Word each day. Use us as Your treasured possession, a kingdom of priests,&a holy nation, that we may reveal Your glory in our families, the church,&the world. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who is the Word. Amen.

The people of Israel were saved by the blood of the Passover lamb, crossed the Red Sea, and traveled through the wilderness to reach Mount Sinai. God did not stop at merely delivering them from Egypt; at Mount Sinai, He established a covenant with them, constituted them as His people, and entrusted them with a holy mission for the world. Today, we too are called not merely to dwell in the joy of salvation, but to live as a covenant people who hold fast to God's covenant words.

1. Observation: Let us examine the text closely and discover God's word. Where did Israel arrive after leaving Egypt?(1-2) To whom did God have Moses convey His message?(3) How does God describe what He has done for Israel?(4) Under what condition does God promise to make Israel His special possession?(5) What does God say He will make of the people who keep the covenant?(6)

2. Interpretation 1) A life of covenant is transformed by the Word(3,5). "If you obey me fully and keep my covenant..."(5)
The Word renews our minds and hearts and enables us to discern God's will (Heb.4:12; Rom.12:1-2). Many people desire God's blessings, but God seeks those who first hold fast to His Word. Let us draw near to the Word, be transformed in our lives, and grow to resemble God day by day.
2) God trains us with eagle's wings(4). God says He led Israel by "carrying them on eagles' wings." An eagle does not keep its young confined to the nest because it loves them; instead, it trains them to fly from great heights and catches them on its wings if they fall. Similarly, God matures our faith through the wilderness. Illness, waiting, failure, tears, and financial hardship are not signs that God has abandoned us, but rather training to build a greater faith. The wilderness we face today is, in the end, a safe place upon God’s wings.
3) Those who hold fast to the words of the covenant are God’s special treasure(5). God calls His obedient people "My own possession" among all nations. Here, "possession" refers to a treasure a king cherishes above all else. God values ​​those who hold fast to His Word more than worldly success. Those who live by the standard of the Word are not swayed by worldly trends but bear fruit in season, like a tree planted by streams of water (Psalm 1:1-3). May you be blessed to live as "God’s treasure" by holding fast to His Word.

4) God calls us to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation(6). God established Israel as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Today, we too must live lives that reveal God within the mission fields of our homes, churches, workplaces, and the world. May you be blessed to live out the mission of helping others come to know God through your words and actions.

3. Application: The Word becomes powerful when it translates into action. Let us apply this together. Am I merely resting in the joy of salvation, or am I living a life transformed by the Word?What is the "wilderness" I am currently passing through, and what is God teaching me through it?Am I making God’s Word the standard for my life and obeying it? How can we live out the mission of being a kingdom of priests and a holy nation in our homes, churches, and workplaces?

4. Commitment/"I will hold fast to God’s covenant word in any circumstance. I will embrace times in the wilderness as training for my faith and make His word the standard for my life. Living as God’s special possession, I will faithfully fulfill the mission of a kingdom of priests in my home, church, and the world."

Loving God Father, thank You for saving us through the blood of the Lamb&calling us to be Your covenant people. May we not merely dwell in the joy of salvation but be transformed daily by Your word. Whenever we face wilderness-like times, let us not lose heart; instead, help us trust in Your love as You carry us on eagles' wings&train us. May we make Your word our standard& obey without wavering, living holy lives as Your special possession. Let the fragrance of Christ flow through our homes, churches,& workplaces,&enable us to joyfully fulfill our mission as a royal priesthood&a holy nation wherever we are. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who is faithful to His covenant. Amen.
